Missing Apple Hardware Test

< Previous page^Computing^Next page >

My MacBook Pro has been slowing down gradually this year–more and more ‘beach balls of death’. I wanted to run the Apple Hardware Test (post-June 2013 this has become ‘Apple Diagnostic Test’), but oddly holding down ‘D’ immediately upon boot-up (prior to the grey screen) produced nothing.

I eventually discovered it’s because for some reason, said test software was missing from my system.

Found the remedy on this page, which also has links to Apple’s dmg downloads.

There is also code there to help determine which file to download for a given system. Either of the two following commands will do it:

system_profiler SPHardwareDataType | grep 'Model Identifier' | awk -F: '{ print $2 }'

ioreg -l | grep board-id | awk -F\" '{ print $4 }'

run from a Terminal window.
